Choosing the right size
Diameters are measured across the top rim; the flat base is usually 3 to 5 cm (1–2″) smaller. Match the base to your hob ring or zone. On an induction hob, check that induction is listed under Hob types: a magnet sticks firmly to a base that works on induction.
A pot for the tripod, a lid for the bacon
- Bail handle with a coiled grip: a steel wire handle with a spring-wrapped middle, for carrying the pot or hanging it over a fire.
- Two side lugs: cast tabs on opposite sides that hold the handle and give a second grip.
- Griddle lid: a flat cast iron lid with a raised edge and an arched grip; turned over, it fries bacon or eggs.
- Uncoated cast iron: pre-seasoned, and the surface gets smoother the more it is used.
Cast iron is heavy and the bail handle and lid get very hot over a fire: use pot holders or fire gloves. Cook on low to medium heat and warm the pot up slowly. It is hand wash only. The heat rating and packed weight are supplier-stated.

Care and cleaning
Wash by hand with warm water; a little mild soap is fine. Loosen stuck-on food by simmering some water in the pot for a few minutes, then scrape it once it has cooled. Dry the pot fully with a cloth, wipe on a very thin coat of cooking oil and store it somewhere dry, with a paper towel between pot and lid so air can move. A little black residue on the cloth is seasoning and is normal. Never pour cold water into a hot pot, as cast iron can crack.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hang it over a campfire? Yes. The bail handle hooks onto a tripod chain or pot crane for cooking over an open fire.
Does the lid work as a pan? Yes. Turned upside down, the flat lid is a small griddle for bacon, eggs or flatbreads.
Can I use metal utensils? Wooden or silicone tools are better: sharp or metal tools can scratch the seasoning.
