Choosing a planter
Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.
Three planting boxes on a steady A-frame
- Three tiers: three long boxes, each set further back than the one below, so every row gets light and rain.
- Fir wood: natural fir with a water-based paint finish and a smooth, sanded surface.
- Drainage holes: six holes let excess water run out so the soil does not become waterlogged.
- A-frame legs: splayed legs on both sides keep the planter stable where it stands.
The planter comes flat-packed and needs assembling; wear gloves while you do. It stands 76 cm tall on a 65 × 75 cm footprint, and a filled planter is heavy, so place it before you fill it.

Care and cleaning
Brush off soil and leaves and wipe the wood with a damp cloth. Wood left outdoors weathers: a coat of outdoor wood oil or stain now and then helps it last. Empty the boxes or move the planter under cover for a hard winter.

What can I grow in it? Flowers, herbs, salad leaves, strawberries and other shallow-rooted plants suit the boxes.
Does it need a liner? No, but a porous planter liner stapled inside each box keeps soil off the wood and helps it last; leave the drainage holes clear.
