Choosing a planter

Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.

Corrugated steel with a covered rim

  • Corrugated panels: ridged steel sheet, 0.5 mm thick, stiffened by its curves.
  • Rubber-edged rim: a black rubber strip over the top edge protects hands and stems from the metal edge.
  • Open bottom: sits straight on the soil for drainage and deep roots.
  • Bolted together: the curved panels join with the screws in the kit; gardening gloves are in the box for assembly.

Assembly is needed. Wear the gloves supplied while you put it together, as sheet steel edges can be sharp before the rim strip goes on. Plants and soil are not included.

Hose the outside down when it gets muddy. At the end of the season, top up the soil and check the screws are still tight.
