Choosing a planter
Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.
A heavy black trough with a classic panelled face
- Cement body: a solid, weighty planter that stays put outdoors.
- Panelled sides: a long raised panel with cut corners on the front and back and an octagonal panel on each end.
- Drainage hole: one hole in the base lets excess water run out.
- Plinth and rim: a stepped base and a flat rim frame the panels.
Cement is heavy, and heavier still once filled with soil, so set the planter on a level, stable surface where it will stay before planting. Cement is a natural material and each piece can vary slightly in tone and texture. Plants are not included.

Care and cleaning
Brush off soil and wipe the outside with a damp cloth. Keep the drainage hole clear so the roots do not stand in water, and raise the planter slightly off the ground on feet or blocks if water pools underneath.
