Choosing a planter
Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.
Growing at waist height
- Waist-high box: the planting box stands on four square legs, 76.5 cm to the top.
- Fabric liner: a black non-woven liner lines the box and keeps the soil in.
- Four drainage holes: in the base, so water does not collect.
- Braced frame: reinforcing bars at the top and bottom keep the box square.
It arrives flat with all fittings, instructions and a pair of gardening gloves, and needs assembling. Fir is a light, soft wood: stand it on level ground and keep it out of standing water. Soil and plants are not included.

Care and cleaning
Brush soil off the wood and wipe it with a damp cloth. Replace the liner if it tears, and keep the drainage holes clear so the soil does not stay waterlogged.
