Choosing a planter
Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.
Forty centimetres of growing depth
- Size: 80 cm across and 40 cm high
- Panels: corrugated galvanised steel with a light green powder coat
- Base: bottomless, so water drains away and roots reach the ground
- Rim: a smooth top edge with no sharp edges
It comes flat in panels and needs assembling. Stand it on soil or on a free-draining surface, since it has no base of its own.
