Roots need drainage: a planter without holes needs a layer of gravel or an inner pot. Clay and ceramic that hold water can crack in frost, so empty them or bring them in for winter unless they are stated frost-resistant. A filled planter weighs far more than an empty one: place large ones before you fill them.

  • Base: open, so water drains into the ground and roots can go deeper
  • Panels: corrugated galvanised steel, coloured outside and cream inside
  • Corners: upright corner posts join the panels

The bed comes as panels for self-assembly. Pick the footprint that suits the space: 100 x 60 cm for a patio edge, up to 120 x 90 cm for a vegetable plot.

How much soil does it take? Filled to the brim, the 100 x 60 cm bed holds about 180 L. The 100 x 100 cm bed holds about 300 L and the 120 x 90 cm bed about 324 L.
